Three Key Tips in Publishing an Academic Article

Over the past 10 + years, I have authored 26 peer-reviewed academic papers and many book chapters, some of which have garnered significant citations. This achievement wasn’t instant; it required dedication, support, feedback, and embracing failures as part of the journey. If faced with rejections or discouraging feedback, persistence is key as success takes time. But there is also knowledge that you need to have when you want to publish a journal article. As an author, editor and reviewer, I have some tips for you.

Writing academic papers differs from crafting essays, MA and PhD theses, and consulting reports. It represents a distinct genre, especially within social science and the broader political science/governance domains. Here are three essential tips to consider when engrossed in your paper:

1. Clearly define your AUDIENCE. In academia, we tailor our writing to a specific disciplinary readership. Identify this audience, select the appropriate journal, and enrich your content and references to resonate with that scholarly community (e.g., referencing their Gods).

2. Articulate your CORE message. A successful academic paper, unlike a report, centers on conveying ONE pivotal idea. While you may have multiple discoveries, pinpoint the primary message for this paper. If you have more than one, consider the potential for separate papers.

3. No data dumping! Once your CORE message is established, meticulously select your data, evidence, and arguments, intertwining them into a COHERENT narrative that emphasizes that central theme. Rather than overwhelming readers with all your data or case studies, focus on the most pertinent information. Less is more!
